Iowans For Peace (IFP) is a coalition of eastern Iowa groups and
individuals, formed in the aftermath of September 11th.
We come from diverse perspectives, but we are united on the following
points:
We oppose bombing and other military actions that inevitably result
in civilian casualties. We oppose the violence of the "War On Terrorism",
which involves unlimited military interventions in numerous countries.
We support more peaceful and just U.S. foreign policies, focused on
peaceful prevention of violent conflict, including: working more
cooperatively with other nations; avoiding vengeful and inflammatory
rhetoric; following the rules of international law that we expect other
nations to follow; reducing military aid to foreign governments and groups;
supporting grassroots economic democracy; and providing increased funding for
the health, education, and welfare of people around the world.
We oppose excessive military spending, especially spending for
nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons.
We support more peaceful and just U.S. domestic policies, including
supporting grassroots economic democracy, and providing increased funding for
the health, education, and welfare of the people in the U.S.
We oppose attacks on civil liberties in the name of
"anti-terrorism"
We support the freedoms and rights embodied in the U.S. Constitution
and Bill of Rights, the U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the
Geneva Convention.
We oppose the use of racial, ethnic, and religious profiling, which
is an unjust and ineffective response to terrorism.
We stand by those in the U.S. who have been victimized by
post-September 11th ethnic and religious prejudice and hate crimes.
Weekly peace vigils still take place in Iowa City Fridays between 4:45 & 5:15 pm
at the corner of Washington & Clinton.
